TALES OF THE HAUNTED

CHRISTOPHER LEE

"Tales of the Haunted" was a Canada & US production horror anthology series, with the first story ("Evil Stalks This House") broadcast in 1981 in syndication in 30 minute episodes shown over five consecutive nights and was hosted by Christopher Lee. Unfortunately, it was an ill conceived project and due to poor ratings & reviews, was abandoned. Later, it was edited down to a 96 minute film, minus the host.

This story see Jack Palance as a self-serving, abusive boor who becomes stranded (along with his two children) by a thunderstorm, forcing them to take shelter in an isolated country estate owned by a group of mysterious and wealthy old dowagers. Seeing a golden opportunity, Palance soon turns to plundering their estate, but his plans collide with the secret activities of a Satanic snake-cult who carry out ritual sacrifices in the attic.

Christopher Frank Carandini Lee was born on 27 May 1922 in Belgravia, London, England, United Kingdom.

Lee is one of the most well known actors in the genres of fantasy, horror and science fiction, appearing in or as a voice actor in such movies and television series as "Star Wars" (franchise), "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" (franchise), "The Tomorrow People", and "The Curse of Frankenstein". He was also the host of "Theatre Macabre" & as host "M.J. James" in the United Kingdom series "Ghost Stories For Christmas".

Sadly, Lee passed away on 7 June 2015 in Chelsea, London, England, United Kingdom.

Today is a tribute to horror legend Christopher Lee. My first design is of Lee as Count Dracula from the 1958 Hammer Studios classic Horror of Dracula which also stars Peter Cushing and Michael Gough. Lee's portrayal of the Count is so ominous and foreboding that his on-screen presence becomes palpable. My second design is of Lee as Im Ho Tep from the 1959 Hammer Studios classic The Mummy which again stars the legendary Peter Cushing. The relentless nature of the mummy in this movie is quite disturbing as it will stop at nothing to achieve its goals. With these movies, Hammer Studios redefined the horror genre in the 1950's with its Technicolor portrayal of gothic horror. Stay tuned tomorrow for another double dose of sheer terror.

This horrific design & freakish looking fellow is the very young veteran actor Christopher Lee as the monster from the 1957 Hammer Horror classic Curse of Frankenstein. It also starred the late great Peter Cushing as Dr. Frankenstein. It was at this time that Hammer Studios redefined the genre of horror. They were really the first studio to present classic gothic horror in Technicolor gory... I mean glory. The first time I saw this movie was when my parents got their first color television in the early 1970's and when the monster was revealed in his full color disfigurement, it was the first movie moment that truly frightened me. Another classic for you to revisit on video for the upcoming holidays. And speaking of revisit, please revisit me tomorrow for another creepy classic.
